Research Statement

Born in Mexico City in 1951. Obtained a B.A. and M.Sc. in Psychology from the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City in 1976 and 1979 respectively; she has a Ph.D. in Social Psychology at the National Autonomus University of Mexico (UNAM), and received the three degrees with honours. A full researcher of the National Institutes of Health and Chief Direction of Epidemiological and Social Research of the National Institute of Psychiatry, she is also a member of the National System of Researchers, since 1984, and in 1999 was promoted to level III (highest possible). In 1986 received from the Mexican Federal Government the Award in Public Health "Gerardo Varela" for her research contributions to national policies in the field of addictions. In 1991 the National Award in Psychology from the National College of Psychologists in the same year the First Award on Health Psychology during the 1st International Congress on Psychology and Health and in 1992 the Award on Psychiatry from the Camelo Foundation. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, of the Mexican Academy of Science and of the National School of Psychologists. In addition, Dr. Medina-Mora has served as temporal advisor for the World Health Organization and the Pan-American Health Organization since 1976, she is a member of the World Health Organization Expert Committee on Addictions since 1986 and member of the International Narcotics Control Board Since 2000. Doctor Medina-Mora's areas of interest are methodologic, psychosocial, and epidemiological issues as they relate to addictions and mental health. Has participated in more than 430 seminars, congress and simposia; has published more than 458 research and research-related articles and her work has been cited in numerous scientific publications 1300 in Mexico as well as in other countries.
